Tether and Bitfinex's Chief Advisor Retires Just as USDT Faces Issues with MiCA Regulation
Tether and Bitfinex’s long-time General Counsel, Stuart Hoegner, has officially retired, passing the legal management role to Michael Hilliard. This announcement was made on Thursday, coinciding with the full implementation of the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations, which took effect on December 30, 2024.
This high-level personnel change comes as the cryptocurrency industry faces increased regulatory demands, especially in Europe. MiCA requires stablecoin issuers to adhere to strict reserve and liquidity standards to ensure transparency and safety in the digital asset ecosystem.
Stuart Hoegner, who has been with Tether and Bitfinex since 2014, was highly regarded for his expertise in navigating complex legal and regulatory challenges throughout his tenure.
In the official statement, the company expressed:
“Stu’s contributions to both Tether and Bitfinex have been invaluable. We are deeply grateful for his years of dedicated service. As we turn this page, we are confident that Michael Hilliard’s leadership will continue to strengthen our legal operations and guide Tether and Bitfinex through the next phase of growth and innovation.”
Michael Hilliard is expected to ensure legal compliance for both companies as the cryptocurrency market evolves and faces increasing pressure from new regulations.
